The department of Ophthalmology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, is one of a kind state of the art setup that blends the cost-effective high-quality treatment with modern techniques and implementation of new advancements. The department is well equipped to treat common eye ailments such as refractive errors as well as manage Cataract, Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea, Neuro-Opthalmology via its various speciality services. The department has the facilities for performing surgeries for Retinal Detachment, Squint, Glaucoma, Corneal transplantation and Oculoplasty.
Camp services are managed by experienced camp officers who organise biweekly camps in rural and difficult to reach areas of Cuddalore & Villupuram
districts (DBCS & general camps). Free ophthalmic consultation is given for all these cases and most of the surgical intervention is either provided
free of cost or at substantially discounted rates to patients from such camps.
Procedures
Procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes include
- Incision and curettage, incision and drainage, small conjunctival mass excisions, tarsorrhaphy, foreign body removal, suture removal etc.

School screening
It is done on a routine basis to far-flung areas to screen school children and efforts are made to provide free spectacles for refractive error patients.
